Former Mets general manager Jared Porter is coming clean.
On the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast episode released Friday, Porter acknowledged sending inappropriate text messages to a female reporter, which led to his firing just 37 days after being hired as the Mets’ GM.
“It was an inappropriate relationship for a lot of reasons,” Porter said, via Apple Podcasts.
“I put myself in that situation,” he continued. “I made the decision to send the text message that I sent. And I certainly shouldn’t have done it.”

The messages in question were sent while Porter worked for the Chicago Cubs as director of professional scouting in 2016. According to ESPN’s report, which came out in January 2021, Porter’s messages included racy photos which went ignored by the reporter, who has since left the job.
As a result of this report, Mets owner Steve Cohen had no option but to fire Porter and replaced him with Zack Scott, who was also dismissed by Cohen after a DWI arrest in September 2021 — Sandy Alderson replaced Scott for the remainder of that season.
“They had to make the best decision for the New York Mets when the article came out, and I knew they would,” Porter said. “I hold zero ill will toward them whatsoever. I do think they made the best decision for the Mets. It’s unfortunate that I put myself and put them in that situation.”
Ahead of the 2022 season, the Mets hired Billy Eppler to be the team’s GM. Eppler served in that role for two years before president of baseball operations David Stearns took over the role in 2024.
